Abstract
Sixth-grader Sugar and her mother lose their beloved house and experience the harsh world of homelessness. They move to Chicago to make a fresh start, but when Sugar's mother has a serious breakdown, Sugar and her beloved dog are put into foster care. Sugar's only link to her old life is her former teacher, Mr Bennett, who encourages her to pour her feelings into heartfelt poems.
