  • Hidden Gold : a true story of the Holocaust

    Creator

    Burakowski, Ella

    Abstract

The Gold family lived an idyllic life in pre-war Poland, each doing their part to run the family grocery store and tobacco concession. The oldest daughter, Shoshana, had many friends, her sister Esther was meticulous as she worked at the family store, and young David was doted on by them all. But that life is shattered in 1939 when Germany invades Poland and Jewish people are forced into the streets; their homes, schools, and businesses burned. We follow the Gold family’s journey as they are forced into hiding.

  • Time out : a teacher's year of reading, fighting, and four-letter words

    Creator

    Shaw, Liane

    Abstract

Before she began writing books for teens, Liane Shaw was an elementary teacher. She brings her gifts for storytelling and humor to this account of her journey into the lives of emotionally challenged students. With little in the way of experience or resources, she found herself thrust into the most challenging kind of teaching imaginable. From the moment Shaw meets her first two boys, as they sit teetering precariously on top of a bookshelf while swearing at the principal, she is both fascinated and terrified.

  • Between myself and them : stories of life with disability

    Krause, Carol

Adults in their 20s share their real experiences living with disability. This collection of first-person narratives and dialogues is grouped into sections pertaining to different aspects of the writers’ lives, including education and work, family and relationships, health and wellness, self-image and sexual relations. Between Myself and Them is a rich and diverse set of stories that challenges the homogeneous interpretation of a very diverse group of people who, when grouped together as "the disabled", lose their individuality.

  • A mother's adoption journey

    Creator

    Ryan, Darlene

    Abstract

For much of her adult life, Darlene believed she wouldn't make a good mother: "Besides, I couldn't admit to anyone that I didn't know how to do mother things. So I married someone who didn't want to have children either." Everything seemed fine for twelve years of her marriage, but then Darlene slowly came to realise that she really did want a child. At age forty, things weren't going to be that easy. In this humorous, warm and poignant book, Darlene takes the reader with her as she decides that the most sensible option left to her is adoption.

Can we do something about pornography without using censorship? Yes, says award-winning journalist and activist Susan G. Cole. Moving beyond the arguments that have polarized the country around this issue, she presents an argument that is original and challenging. Pornography and the Sex Crisis deals with the lived reality of pornography by dealing with such questions as: What is pornography? What are its effects? How does it influence perceptions of sexuality and what can be done about it?

  • Playing it forward : 50 years of women and sport in Canada

    Creator

    Demers, Guylaine

    Greaves, Lorraine

    Kirby, Sandra

    Lay, Marion

    Abstract

Over the last 50 years, the struggles to achieve equity in sport have become central to the feminist mission. This book contains an inspiring collection of stories from the women on the front lines: athletes, coaches, educators, and activists for women's sport, who have done so much to foster change. Many of the women profiled here reflect on their tough beginnings in sport: being isolated and unconnected, competing in makeshift settings, training alone, and inadequate equipment. But they also reflect on the joy of movement, teamwork, and competition.
